Filmset for One

Filmsets are places where the world of film suddenly becomes tangible. As spaces in between reality and fiction they are like the movie theatre itself, a transitional world. For this work a fantasy for one was created. It is a living room scene that is set somewhere around the fifties and contains original elements from that time. It is however not an exact replica from a situation of that time because it is a filmset and is therefore an object to be used in another situation in which not so much detail is required.

Someone once told me about the Twin Peaks effect of recent modern art. That person meant aesthetically attractive work with a dark side to it, something that is not quite right about it. I wanted this work to have that feeling. It has something uncanny, but nothing is literally implied. Although it is suffocating because of its measurement, it seems desperately trying to be 'normal' with its picture frames, flower curtains and hoover. It feels like there could be a body buried in the backyard while the smiling housewife is offering you tea.
